What no ‘elearning’?

This tweet from David Hopkins

generated some reflection in relation to my last role…

Despite me having the title of Learning Technologies Manager and the organisation generally defining ‘elearning’ as ‘click next, self-paced’ modules I was able to utilise a range of methods and media to meet needs that had  previously been meet via traditional eLearning and physical classroom activity.

In 10 months I:

Produced a handful of taking head videos and placed them on our internal collaborative platform , Jive.Produced 15-20 screencasts and placed them onto Jive.Produced a handful of audio interviews.Created a single ‘go to‘ L&D group on Jive. This served as both a space to start, encourage and participate in conversations as well as a ‘marketing’ space for our activities.Designed a game involving a range of posters each including a different QR code which would link to various multimedia assets.Hosted the multimedia elements mentioned above on a Vimeo Pro account which provided immediate access coupled with an element of security.Used SurveyMonkey to revolutionise our assessment process and move it toward the Brinkerhoff Success Case method.Used Jive to create an activity that mirrored a real life customer interaction which created strong intrinsic motivators to utilise the provided performance support tool to resolve the ‘situation’.Introduced the concept and practical application of  ’spaced repetition of learning’ using Retenda, in order to support the activity mentioned above.Used Adobe XI Pro to create a range of FAQs documents and checklists.Used tools such as Powtoon and Sparkol to create a range of animations to support various activities.Facilitated various online sessions using Adobe Connect.Used a Pro Scoop.it! account to curate content on a range of subjects.

In short, I was able to operate up to, and indeed beyond, the expectations of the role, without ever having to go near an LMS or an authoring tool.

Was it easy? – No

Did everybody ‘roll over’ without a fight? – No

Did I experience some challenges? – Yes

Did some of the activities take longer than they really needed to due to the ‘engagement’ that needed to be done? – Yes

Did I win a lot of fans along the way as a result of sitting down with them and talking through their problem, my proposal and their fears? – Yes

Would I take this approach again? – Absolutely

Regular readers will know that I’m not one of the ‘Burn the LMS/authoring tool‘ fraternity as I truly believe they do have a place, depending on what you are trying to achieve, so I wouldn’t have been averse or afraid of using them should the solution to the problem have dictated it – but here’s the interesting thing….. it never did.

Not in all the time I was there or the many pieces of work I was involved was a ‘piece of elearning in an LMS’ or an ‘exodus to the classroom‘ ever the right answer.

Makes you wonder how many times as an Industry we’ve gone down the wrong route for fear of challenging, for worry of what people will think of our ‘off the wall‘ ideas???

So over to you…

Where have you come up with an alternative to the ‘old favourites’ approach?

Were you allowed to progress it?

What was the impact on your relationship with the original requester, when (and if) you produced an alternative to their request.

Scheduling a meeting is a doddle, I mean a Doodle..

…whatever it’s called it’s quick, simple and cheap to do!

Scheduling a meeting with work colleagues is usually very easy to do as (in my experience) everybody is ‘connected’ via an email management client such as Outlook which allows you to organise meetings around peoples availability as you can usually see their calendar which (you hope) they’ve kept up to date.

The problem lies when you are trying to arrange a meeting with people outside of your organisation who do not exist in your calendar system, again in my experience this usually involves time exhausting multiple phone calls and/or emails around the relevant parties in order to arrange a mutually convenient time.

Well no more!

I discovered Doodle several months ago and had the opportunity to use it ‘in anger’ for the first time during the planning stage of my first panel podcast.

Doodle allows you to publish potential dates and times onto the internet, publicise that information to your meeting attendees, who are then requested to select the option(s) that best suits them. A cut off date can be applied to the Doodle which means that you can be getting on with the more important things in life, whilst your meeting attendees are only taking 30 seconds out of theirs to select their preferred times.

Throughout the process you can drop back in at any time to see which option(s) are shaping up as the faves. Once the window of voting has closed, Doodle will even tot up which option is the most preferred.

Here’s a quick overview of how easy it is to set up.

So over to you..

Are you currently using this tool yourself, if so what have your experiences been?

If this is the first time you have heard about it, can you see any occasions when you might find it useful?

Why not share your thoughts with everybody via the comments section of this blog post…

Get your foot in the door – Key Skills

In the run up to Christmas last year I met with a potential client and suggested (as I am now doing in this blog) that they take a look at what is going on in their business and then trawl the app stores looking for any free/low costs apps that could help to achieve their business aims.

The organisation in question was doing a great deal of commendable work to upskill elements of their workforce in the key skills of literacy and numeracy by offering them GCSE tuition and examination(s).

If your organisation also offers development opportunities in these key skills areas then you’ve got a wonderful opportunity to ‘get your foot in the door‘ and prove the worth of performance support via mobile devices.

Why not take a look at these apps and consider whether you might want to direct any of your learners who are undertaking any form of key skills to them.

GCSE English revision app (iOS) – £1.99p

GCSE Maths revision app (iOS) – £1.99p

GCSE English revision app (Android) – £FREE

GCSE Maths revision app (Android) – £FREE

Inevitably there will be some people who do not have a mobile device and will bemoan the fact that you are offering their colleagues who do have a mobile device something that they themselves are unable to benefit from, or they will complain over the fact that the apps cost money – don’t let this put you off.

Simply tell them to carry on using whatever tool or process they have always used – simples!!!

And you know what? Even if people don’t opt for these apps, you may have just sewn the seeds for them to look for an alternative….

Good luck and let me know how you get on

A Stepping Stone to Success

Basic mobile phones can be used to deliver educational content. Basic mobile phones can be used to deliver educational content.

Like other Malian youth, Mariam Coulibaly enjoys using her mobile phone to call family and friends and to listen to music. But today, she is using her phone in a different way: to practice reading and writing in her own language—Bambara.

Coulibaly is a participant in PAJE-Nièta (Support to Youth Entrepreneurs Project), which is working to provide 10,000 rural, out-of-school youth with basic education, work readiness and technical training, and livelihood activities. The program is led by EDC and funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

PAJE-Nièta is pilot testing a new mobile learning (m-learning) platform for mobile phones. Called Stepping Stone, the Java-based application enables teachers and curriculum developers to create multimedia lessons for playback on basic mobile phones.

Educators using Stepping Stone can inexpensively create multimedia presentations for students in resource-lean classrooms. Students benefit from having current materials they can study in the classroom as well as on their own and with peers.

EDC’s Scott Isbrandt, the m-learning project director, leads Stepping Stone’s development and testing. “Stepping Stone will help students reinforce what they’re learning in and out of the classroom, with an emphasis on building reading and entrepreneurship skills,” he says. “We see it as a key to learning and improving livelihoods for youth entrepreneurs.”

The Stepping Stone platform lets lesson creators combine content from a library of photos or illustrations, text, and instructional audio or video to create lessons. Lessons are then loaded onto micro memory cards that are compatible with mobile phones. Basic education skill builders created with Stepping Stone include alphabetic, numeric, and phonetic sequences, as well as math drills and quizzes.

“Until now, the telephone has been used for calls and to listen to music,” says Stepping Stone Developer Abdoulaye Koureissi. “But if one can learn with a telephone, this is a plus. We know that everyone has a telephone, even if they don’t read.”

Stepping Stone builds on EDC’s experience developing m-learning technologies to deliver educational content to students in developing countries, such as Mali and Rwanda, where mobile phones are used to help teachers in remote communities access current, research-based curricula.

Basic mobile phones work well for delivering m-learning in resource-lean countries such as Mali. The project chose Nokia S40 series phones for their availability and low cost. For this first phase of pilot testing, EDC distributed 3,000 of these phones, preloaded with lessons, to Mali PAJE-Nièta youth participants.

“It’s amazing to see that some of the remotest places with little to no connectivity now have access to a device that is affordable to many and can promote learning and entrepreneurship,” Isbrandt says. “It’s exciting to see the impact of increased access to critical information, and how basic education and entrepreneurship training can improve lives.”

Youth participant Mariam Coulibaly agrees. “I think the lessons on the phone are helpful, especially the lessons with letters that explain how to write with your hand in the air or on a piece of paper.”

12/03/2012NFPA road warrior – Mark Hilbert

In putting together our semi-annual training catalog, I was introduced to a number of NFPA instructors. One thing, besides the many interesting personalities, was apparent; the amount of experience, wisdom and ability of our instructors is mind boggling. I found their backgrounds fascinating and decided to profile some of our instructors. This is the first of what I hope to be many profiles featured in this space.

EDC Presents New Findings on Career Technical Education

A rapidly aging workforce and increasingly demanding workplaces have led to a new focus on the field of career and technical education (CTE) and its role in preparing high school students for college and careers. To help inform CTE discussions and policy-making, EDC has published a new white paper, Opportunities and Challenges in Secondary Career and Technical Education, which will be presented during the 2014 Association for Career & Technical Education (ACTE) Policy Seminar today in Washington, D.C.

Authored by EDC college and career readiness expert Ilene Kantrov, who will co-present at the seminar with colleague Joyce Malyn-Smith, the white paper offers a panoramic view of CTE—its strengths, needs, and possibilities. Findings are drawn from EDC’s 2013 survey of 850 CTE educators nationwide, a series of interviews with state CTE leaders, and a review of relevant literature.

“Our survey and interviews reflected that career and technical education is in demand, is important, and needs additional resources to expand,” said Kantrov. “When it blends hands-on work experience with rigorous academic learning, CTE cultivates key skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration—skills students need to thrive in the workplace, as well as in college.”

Key findings include the following:

Interest and enrollment in CTE is on the rise. Workforce experts view the range of careers for which CTE prepares students as both important to the U.S. economy and financially advantageous to students. Investments in supporting and expanding CTE programs remain low. Fully 73 percent of survey respondents reported flat or declining budgets over the past five years. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) underscore the importance of career readiness as well as college readiness. Yet CTE leaders feel that non-CTE educators may interpret CCSS as simply requiring more rigorous academic content and overlook the value of the real-world work experience that is the hallmark of CTE. Fewer than 18 percent of survey respondents reported that their students take academic courses in which CTE is an integral part of the instruction, compared with nearly 60 percent of CTE courses that integrate academics. CTE programs that have strong partnerships with thriving industries and higher education are well-positioned to ensure students’ college and career readiness.

The paper, available here, is the first in an EDC series on CTE.

Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) is a global nonprofit organization that creates learning opportunities for people around the world, empowering them to pursue healthier, more productive lives. EDC manages 250 projects in 30 countries. Visit www.edc.org.

March 19, 2013Profiling Bob Caputo; one of the many NFPA training instructors at NFPA Conference & Expo

We are really proud of all of our training instructors here at NFPA. As many of our blog readers already know, NFPA represents nearly 70,000 active members involved in fire, building and life safety. Members of the NFPA technical committees share their expertise and contribute to the codes and standards process. We tap some of the best technical committee members to help us teach training courses on our codes and standards.

NFPA Conference & Expo is where many of our instructors come together to teach over 150 sessions over 3 days. Watch this video to experience the dedication and enthusiasm that our instructors bring to NFPA training.

04/18/2013Evolution of learning at NFPA

As an undergrad student at Bridgewater State College in 1986, our professors were still using the blackboard as a teaching tool. You took notes as best as you could and hoped you would have enough information to review before mid-terms so you could acheive a good grade. Fast forward to 2002 and as an "aged" graduate student at Suffolk University in Boston, I was amazed at how learning had evolved. Class lessons were now online along with a syllabus and other collateral materials. If you missed a class you could download the presentation and review it before the next class.

In 2005, I was in awe sitting at home on my PC taking an online marketing class to finish up my MBA. My children were very young at the time and I will never forget joking with them that I had to go to school and then moving from the kitchen to the den. "Daddy, I thought you were going to school? I would smile and say I am at school." The curious looks on their faces were priceless. That particular online class was pretty basic compared to the online courses offered in the market today. It was essentially a Powerpoint presentation with an online chat as the interaction device.

At NFPA, I feel somewhat ancient thinking back to the blackboard learning of the mid 80's but at the same time I am thrilled to be a part of the evolution in education. NFPA recently launched a new online learning system where you can take self-guided courses whenever and wherever you want. The classes integrate expert content that is presented with a voice-over along with video clips and interactive learning tools. The courses are organized into modules by NFPA code and are simple  to use.

We put together a video tour of our new self-guided system along with commentary by our subject matter experts. Have a look and let us know what you think.
